Exercise 1:


Teacher : You are late to class, Pradeep. (Complaining)

Pradeep : Madam, I _________ the bus. The next bus _______ (Apologizing)

Teacher : In that case you should _______ (Suggesting)

Pradeep : ________ (Agreeing, Leave taking)

Answer:

Teacher : You are late to class, Pradeep.

Pradeep : Madam, I’m sorry. ¡ missed the bus. The next bus was after hallan hour.

Teacher : In that case you should not have come to class.

Pradeep : Yes, madam. I’m sorry. Shall I leave now?


Exercise 2:


(Rahul and his wife Latha plan to have a holiday. They discuss the options.)

Rahul : Latha, my boss told me that I could take a vacation.

Latha : ________ (congratulating)

Rahul : ________ (suggesting)

Latha : ________ (disagreeing)

Rahul : ________ (giving an option)

Latha : How about Shimla ? It’ll be lovely there.

Rahul : But you know I’m not much of a mountaineer.

Latha : You love the sea, don’t you?

Latha : Why don’t you call a travel agency right away?

Rahul : ____________________

Answer:

Rahul : Latha, my boss told me that I could take a vacation.

Latha : Oh! Good. I’m alad vou could make it.

Rahul : Now that I have so many days of leave, why notpo to Rajasthan?

Latha : Oh no! It would be very hot in Rajasthan.

Rahul : Then vou decide the place.

Latha : How about Shimla ? It’ll be lovely there.

Rahul : But you know I’m not much of a mountaineer.

Latha : You love the sea, don’t you?

Rahul : Yes, I do.

Latha : Why don’t you call a travel agency right away?

Rahul : Ill do that.


Exercise 3:


You and your friend are at the cinema. You have got two seats on either side of a gentleman, who offers to change his seat so that you and your friend can sit together. Complete the dialogue given below.


You : Excuse me, sir. Could you please

Gentilman : Oh yes, definitely. Where are your seats?

You : They are on either side of your seat.

Gentilman : ____________________

You : Thank you, sir. We’ve been waiting to see this movie together.

Gentilman : I understand. By the way

You : I am Aniket.

Gentilman : Fine thank you.

You : I am Aniket This isAnkur, my friend.

Gentilman : Fine thank you.

(Ms. Shanta wants to buy a new TV set. She visits the showroom and talks to the sales person there.)

Sales person: Good morning madam. Can I help you?

Sales person: Both are very good madam. We have the latest models.

Ms.Shanta : No, could you please tell me between Sony and Samsung which is better?

Sales person : Both are very good madam. We have the latest models.

Ms. Shanta : Can you please explain the features to me?

Sales person : Certainly.

Ms. Shanta : Thank you. ¡ think!’!! settle for Sony.


Exercise 5:


Neetu is interested in doing a course in joUmalism. She calls up the Department of JoUmalism to find out the details of the course. The public relations officer answers the phone.

P.RO. : Good morning. Department of JoUmalism.

Neetu : ____________ (Introducing and enquiring about the courses)

P.R.O. : We offer two courses. Bachelor of Communication and JoUmalism (BCJ) and Master of Communication and JoUmalism (MCi).

Neetu : _______ (request to know about the duration of the course).

P.R.O. : BCJ is a two year course and MCJ is a one year course. Any graduate can apply for BCJ and those who have passed BCJ can apply for MCI.

Neetu : 1m Neetu here. I’ve just completed my B.A. in Humanities. I want to know about the courses you offer.

Akshay : Which chapters in Thermodynamics do you prefer to revise?

Arvind : You go ahead with your revision. I need a break. I’ll take leave ofyou. Bye.

Anu knocks on the door of the doctor’s consulting room.

Doctor : Please come in.

Doctor : Please sit down. Now tell me about your problem.

Doctor : From when are you feeling this giddiness?

Doctor : Take these medicines and you Will be fine in two days.

Answer:

Anu : Good morning Doctor. I’m Anu Joseph. I called you yesterday for an appointment.

Doctor : Please sit down. Now tell me about your problem.

Anu : I’ve been feeling slightly giddy these days.

Doctor : From when are you feeling this giddiness?

Anu : I’ve had this problem for the past two weeks. I feel it every time I get up from the

sitting position.

Doctor : Take these medicines and you will be fine in two days.

Anu : Thank you very much doctor. It’s a great relief to know that I’ll be fine in just two days.


Exercise 8:


(Joseph meets Shankar, a computer technician, to get his computer repaired.)

Joseph : Good morning sir.

ShaƱkar: Good morning, please be seated. _________ (Seeking information)

Joseph : My computer (Giving information)

Shankar: Right now we are too busy. Can you leave your PC with us for two days?

Joseph : Sorry I _____________ (Expressing disapproval)

Shankar: I am afraid you will have to go to another technician.

Joseph : ________________ (Ending conversation)

Answer:

Joseph : Good morning sir.

Shankar: Good morning, please be seated. May I know the problem with your computer?

Joseph : My computer has gone very slow. It takes more than a minute for each file to open.

t don’t know what the problem is. It works. But it’s very, very slow.

Shankar: Right now we are too busy. Can you leave your PC with us for two days?

Joseph : Sorry, I’m afraid I can’t wait for two days. I brought the PC to you because I’ve a lot

of work to catch up with and need the PC badly.

Shankar: I am afraid you will have to go to another technician.

Joseph : Okay, will do that as I’m really in a hurry. Thank you for your time.


Exercise 9:

(Fatima is Prema’s new neighbour. They meet and introduce themselves.)

Fatima : ______________ (Greeting) May I come in?

Prema : ________________ (Responds to greeting)

Fatima : ___________________ (Introduces herself)your next door neighbour.

Prema : _____________________ (Introduces herself) Please sit down.

Answer:

Fatima : Good evening. May I come in?

Prema : Good evening. Yes, surely. Do come in.

Fatima : I’m Fatima. Hope I’m not disturbing you. I’m your next door neighbour.

Prerna : Oh! I see. Glad. that you have made time to visit me. I’m Prema. We too have just

moved in. Please sit down.


Exercise 10:


(Uma and Ann are strangers and meet at a bus stop.)

Uma : Excuse me, ____________ ? (Asking for bus number)

Ann : ___________________ (GIving Information)

Uma : _________________ (Asking for platform number)

Ann : Go to platform number 27 and wait there.

Uma : ____________________ (Expressing gratitude)

Answer:

Uma : Excuse me. Do you know if 109 E has left?

Ann : I’ve been here for the past 15 minutes. 109 E hasn’t come. But it’s better that you

take 115. The route of 115 is the same, but it’s more frequent than 109 E.

Uma : Oh! Thank you. But which platform should I go to if ¡ have to catch 115?

Ann : Go to platform number 27 and wait there.

Uma : Thanks a lot. You have been a great help. God bless.
