Gifting books in fond memory

Ashwitha I Arts gifting a book

We celebrate our birthdays in our college -with our teachers and friends. For us, it's a happy occasion celebrated in a special way. On that day, we gift books to our college library. Thereby we gift the joy of reading to ourselves.
Earlier we distributed sweets to our friends on our birthdays and we felt pride to distribute it to our lecturers also. But, it's our teachers who suggested us to gift books instead of sweets. Joy of reading books remains forever.  So, from this year, it's ‘a Birthday with Books'. A birthday without sweets, yet ‘very sweet'.

Some books gifted by students

On the day of our birthdays, we hand over the books to our principal in the morning assembly. Our friends and teachers cheer us, ‘Happy Birth Day to You'. A beautiful Letter of Greeting is presented to us wishing happy birthday and also thanking us for enriching our library. After that we read a passage from that book after telling its name and author's name.

Letter of Greeting

A week before our birthdays we tell our teachers our wish to gift books. They arrange the books for gifting. A book costing minimum Rs 50 is given. Some students have given 2-3 books also. The senior students of our college, who got inspired by this program have also gifted books on their birthdays. Our lecturers also have celebrated their birthdays by giving books. Our Economics lecturer has given the annual subscription of the monthly magazine, ‘Spardha Spoorthi’.
We have a small library set up by our lecturers initially by bringing  books from their homes. Though  Sitharam Jindal Foundation Bangalore has donated books worth Rs 23000 last year, the number of books is not enough to satisfy our reading hunger. This programme has helped to grow our library. This has also helped us to make friends with books. Moreover it is a meaningful celebration of the occasion. Impressed by this, we have decided to celebrate every special occasion – may be naming ceremony, wedding or house warming by gifting books in its fond memory. We have told our neighbours and friends also that they can celebrate the special occasions with us by gifting books to our college.

A different day, and it's a different way..

We listen to speeches and also give prepared speeches, we write pages and we also read several books, everywhere and Every year -about pollution. Pollution, pollution, pollution!!!
This has created Noise Pollution!
But what do we do?! Certainly we add to pollution. While celebrating festivals also we are harming our mother nature- knowingly or unknowingly.
Ganesha Chathurthi. A festival of nature God. On that day also we do a lot of harm to our nature. Our puranas say Mother Parvathi, who symbolises nature, created Ganapa using dirt from her body. But how do we prepare Ganesha idols for Puja? It's definitely not good for the mother earth. We prepare large sized idols of Plaster of Paris, using chemical-based colours. Even in a small village like Vandse there are 3-4 public pendals doing Sarvajanika Ganesha Utsava and there are idols prepared in houses. Thus immersion of all these idols definitely pollute our water bodies.
So, what is the alternative? Eco-friendly idols and celebration.
But how?
Can we do something? When we thought about preparing idols, the Clay Model Competition came to our mind. Many of my friends have participated in it in highschool and have prepared different models and the most repeated model is Ganesha. Moreover, Ganesha is a simple God, easily moulded using simple art. And for us, message is more important than beauty.
So, we started out. We brought fertile red soil from the nearby forest. Pounding and mixing it, prepared the clay. Then shaped the idols using our imagination.

In the beginning, it was not a good artwork. But later it came out better than we thought. We insert ex seeds in them. We also decorated them with leaves, flowers and nuts. We even made Ganesha's favorite dish, Modaka and laddu. And can we leave Ganesha's vehicle, Mooshika the rat?  Using the clay, we made the rat also.
35 students of the college prepared 10 idols in about 2 hours. Then we exhibited the decorated idols. Our lecturers and other students appreciated our work and our sincere concern for saving nature.
We dug the pits and ‘planted' these Ganeshas. So these plant-a-Ganeshas grow into plants later so that it is a daily worship of the son of nature. The puranas say, Mother Parvathi symbolises nature.
A simple thought and a simple work has given us the satisfaction that we have done something different to help mother earth.

I am Vandana Shiva

 -Beebi Sulthana

“You are Vandana Shiva. You have to tell your story. Tell about your parents, your village and about Chipko, ……..” , Sir was telling me. I was there in the Computer Room with my 5-6 friends. Sir had a plan of presenting an English Skit for the celebration of Vanamahotsava. The story was from a lesson in English textbook- “Everything I need to know I learned in the forest”, written by Vandana Shiva. There is a story of an illiterate village woman, Bachani Devi, She resisted her husband from cuuting trees of the forest. He had got the contract to cut trees. Bachani Devi led the resistance against her own husband. The women held lighted lanterns even though it was broad daylight. It was a symbol of teaching the forest officials the knowledge of forestry.

Being Vandana Shiva in the skit, I had to narrate the incidents. I have read the lesson and learnt about Vandana  Shiva. She is an activist for biodiversity. She participated in Chipko Movement and in the lesson she tells about the difficulties faced by rural women because of cutting trees. She tells about the incidents she had seen. I thought, “ Now my role is to tell about those incidents as if I have seen them. I have to say,” I am Vandana Shiva. I have seen the Chipko Movement, Not She is Vandana Shiva. She has seen……”. I practised my dialogues. Our English Sir had converted Bachani Devi's incident in the lesson into a skit. My friend Shwetha was playing the role of Bachani Devi. Her voice is high pitched and she could play the role of a tough woman very well. She would come shouting slogans like, “Light these lanterns, and show them the light”, “Save forest, Save life”, etc. The other women would repeat the slogans. Sowmya, Sumana and Shubha played the role of other women. They showed that toughness of fighters in their voice and manner. Pradeep, Adarsh, Nagendra,Rajesh and Annayya played the roles of forest contractors and officials.  We rehearsed the skit for about ten days. In the beginning we had nervousness. It was our first attempt in English and for some students it was the first chance to come on the stage. So we practised well as we had to present the skit before all the students and guests. Bhaskar Udupa Sir guided us to enact the play. I and Sumana also learnt an English song on saving earth. We had to sing it before the beginning of the skit.
On 6th July, we were  waiting the function to begin. I was anxious and a  little nervous. The guests came and the function started. Manjusha announced about our skit. I and Sumana went on the stage and sang,”The earth is my home. …”, It came very well. My confidence grew. Then I started narrating, ”I am Vandana Shiva.   ,,,” Even though I missed some words and sentences I didn’t stop. My friends came  on the stage, shouting slogans. Shwetha shouted in a loud voice, “ He may be my own husband. But cutting trees, No, no, no….”. The students watching the skit were surprised by the strength of her character. Then the boys who were playing the role of contractors came and tried to insult the women by calling them,” foolish”. But they showed the courage and stopped them from cutting trees.

The guests present there liked the skit very much and they told that the theme was relevant. They also appreciated our acting and said some good words in their speech. It was my first experience of playing a skit. That was also in English!
I have learned a lot of things from this experience.

Eco-friendly Plant-a-Ganapa

                 -Nagendra II Com

A number of regional festivals are celebrated in Kundapur Taluk. Bhootha Pooje (Spirit worship), Jakani (worship of souls of our forefathers), Hosthu( welcoming new crop), Hosthilu ajji and many other local festivals. Each festival has its own way of celebration which is unique to our region.
‘Swani Thinglu” or Shravana marks the beginning of the worship of threshold or Hosthilu of my house. On the first day of Swami month, my mother sows some seeds like green gram, horse gram in a mud pot  which has red soil mixed with turmeric powder. The pot is kept closed for 3 days. The seedlings which sprout after 3 days are called Kollu Hoo in local language. They are used to worship the threshold along with’Swani Kodi', a local pink plant which grows during this month.

Early in the mornings of this month, my mother cleans the threshold, draws beautiful white lines using Shedi or white clay and decorates it with Kollu hoo, Swani kodi and Ratha pushpa.
Hosthilu Ajji is the celebration of welcoming, offering varieties of food to appease and sending off our forefathers. It is celebrated on the 5th, 7th or 9th day of Swami month in the evening. We celebrate it with special decorations and a special pooja. Special food items like dosa, chicken curry and Undla Kai are prepared. Undla Kai is the item prepared specially for Ajji. It is made using white and boiled rice. The batter of these rices are fried using ghee or oil. These Undla Kais are used for keeping incense or Dhupa. My mother lays 6-7 plantain leaves in the hall facing outside and serves all the food items. This is “Ede iduvudu' or offering food to our forefathers to appease them. After this ritual we enjoy a feast with our relatives and friends. I wait for this feast on every day of Ajji.
Thus, this local festival has unique celebration found only in our region and it also helps us to have merry time together.

   Festival of Forest

Every year we celebrate this festival. We plant saplings, we play skits and sing nature songs and listen to the talk by an expert in the field. The whole day we involve in nature related activities. It's Vanamahotsava. The first week of July.
This year we celebrated Vanamahotsava on 6th July. There was a skit against deforestation. The II PU students performed it. “Bachani Devi's Resistance”. It's an adaptation of II PU English lesson, “ Everything I need to know I learned in the forest”, written by Vandana Shiva. This skit highlighted how illiterate village women fought to save forest. The performers received appreciation for their good work. Then Beebi Sulthana and Sumana of II Com sang nature songs.
A stage function to distribute saplings to students:
S. Prabhakaran, IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forest(DCF), Kundapur division, Dr P Prabhu, Retired IFS officer and Prabhakar Kulal, Range Forest Officer were the Chief guests. Forest official of Neralakatte, Hema was present.
Our Lecturer, Prakash Naik gave an introductory speech. Then S Prabhakran, IFS, spoke on the occasion. He said,” Human activities have impacted the wild life. Thus wild plants and animals are at risk of extinction. Deforestation and land degradation are causing water scarcity and erosion. A better understanding between people and nature can help to restore the balance".
S Prabhakaran has made a remarkable achievement by scaling Mount Everest. He has been the first IFS officer to scale Mount Everest in 2016. He narrated his experience of mountaineering. Then he was felicitated for his achievement.
Then Dr Nagesh Prabhu distributed saplings to students. He told about the importance of forest for human existence. He also donated a binocular and a book on Bird watching by Salim Ali to tour college.
Our principal Halappa G K presided. Welcome address was given by Sandeep II Com, Manjusha II Com anchored and Vignesh II Com gave vote of thanks.
After the function the guests planted saplings in the college premises.

It has made me who I am today.
My College life has been full of different experiences over the years. It gave various opportunities to develop not only my scholastic abilities but also the art and sport side. It supported me in my sports as well as exposed me to numerous types of people. All of this accounted to make me understand how to behave socially and in building a personality which I have today.
There are numerous things that make College life the best phase in one’s life. All of this eventually is because we are young to do mistakes again and again till we realize, dumb enough to not think about people and do what we feel like doing, curious to know everything we can and most importantly still not exposed and contaminated with the evil feelings of this world. And all of this makes us build a personality of our own.
I owe my gratitude to this institution for giving me opportunities to develop my personality. I cherish sweet memories of this Vandse College in my heart and feel really proud to be a part of this college.
